I attended The Listed Property Show recently, which offers a pretty comprehensive programme designed for owners, professionals, and enthusiasts of listed buildings, covering key aspects of restoration, maintenance, and energy efficiency.

The event ran over two days and was well attended. Unsurprisingly, given the Government's desire to reduce carbon emissions and Historic England's guidance around it, energy efficiency was a key focus. Over 150 suppliers, contractors and consultants exhibited at the show and it was useful to see what innovations and improvements were on show in the repair and maintenance of listed properties.
I found some of the talks particularly useful, which covered a range of topics, including:
Architectural Integration & Extensions – Guidance on sensitively extending and altering listed buildings while preserving their historic character, using appropriate materials and techniques.
Building Performance & Energy Efficiency – Strategies for keeping traditional homes warm, dry, and healthy by reinstating original design elements and integrating modern services carefully.
Dampness, Infestation & Rot Control – Understanding causes, diagnosis, and appropriate treatments for damp issues, wood rot, and pest infestations in older properties.
Historic Research & Legal Considerations – How to trace the history of a listed building and navigate the complexities of obtaining Listed Building Consent and planning permissions.
Use of Traditional Materials – The importance of lime in traditional buildings and how incorrect use can lead to problems.
Sustainable Retrofits & Modern Technology – Exploring options for installing solar panels, heat pumps, and energy-efficient insulation while maintaining historical integrity.
Window Restoration & Heritage Conservation – Balancing energy efficiency with the preservation of period features, such as windows and original architectural elements.
If you are a subscribing member of the Listed Property Owners Club (LOPC), entry to the annual event is free (otherwise, it's £60). Well worth a visit, I think.
