 ABOUT US

Owning or caring for a traditional property is a rewarding journey, often marked by long periods of calm punctuated by moments of intense activity. For those who look after listed properties, the process can be as fascinating as it is sometimes challenging.

When we bought our own listed home in Billingshurst, it was clear the property needed significant care to restore the charm of its original period features. The restoration began immediately and continues to this day—a true labour of love that deepened my understanding and appreciation of heritage conservation.

At Churchgate Heritage, we are passionate about delivering excellence in traditional building restoration, repair, and conservation for listed property owners across West Sussex. My personal expertise spans a wide range of traditional crafts, including wattle and daub, masonry (brick, flint, and stone), timber, and lime (plaster, render, and mortar). We also provide project management services, collaborating with trusted specialists in heritage trades when needed to ensure every project benefits from the right skills and knowledge.

To continually refine my craft, I’ve completed advanced training, such as the Building Conservation Masterclasses accredited by Historic England. Learning from some of the best in the field has helped me ensure that Churchgate Heritage consistently meets the highest standards of quality and authenticity.

In today’s market, it’s increasingly difficult for listed property owners to find contractors with the specialist heritage skills required to carry out repairs and restorations sensitively. Modern building practices, while effective for contemporary structures, can often harm historic properties when improperly applied. That’s why it’s essential to work with someone who understands the unique needs of traditional buildings.

Churchgate Heritage offers a friendly, professional, and informed service dedicated to preserving the fabric of your listed property while finding practical solutions for modern living. Explore our services, view examples of our completed projects, and get in touch to discuss how we can help you care for your home.

Traditional timber framed room in need of repair

BEFORE

Traditional timber framed room with restored panel infills

AFTER

A beautiful period bedroom after we repaired and restored it. Some of the oak timber work in the corner and along one side had been covered with plasterboard to hide collapsed wattle and daub panel infills. By the way, the radiator is dead level - it's the house that's wonky!
